What Your LED Flashlight Can Do

The bright light of an LED flashlight can be an invaluable tool when on a camping or hunting trip, and a potential life saver in a home or car emergency. The power and efficiency of these light sources has made them incredibly popular throughout the world. How did these bright lights become so popular? How does the LED bulb in the flashlight actually work? Science and practicality have come together to create these innovative light sources - it may just be a good idea to know why.

What is an LED?

To understand how an LED flashlight works it is important to understand what an LED light is. LED stands for light-emitting diode. It is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current passes through it, like a simple circuit. This circuit produces electroluminescence, which can be infrared, visible, or ultraviolet, and a number of different colors depending on the make up and condition of the semiconducting material used. These lights are often very small, typically less than 1 mm. Manufacturers usually add special optics or lenses to the chip to help with reflection, creating an incredibly powerful beam for the size of the bulb.

LED lights are embedded in a high-impact epoxy, which makes them virtually indestructible and therefore perfect for handheld lights. There are no loose or moving parts either. LED lights also produce no heat, allowing them to be used for long periods of time without concern of burning out.

LED Light Advantages

LED light technology has certain advantages that help it stand out for flashlight and lamp use - visibility, intensity, color and efficiency.

Visibility

LED lights naturally emit a high level of light, called luminous intensity. This visibility is increased by adding chips to the encapsulation or using secondary optics to distribute light. For most LED flashlights or lanterns, there are a number of individual light sources in a single lens.

Intensity

The intensity of the light is another characteristic of LED lights. The light output varies depending on the type of chip and encapsulation that is used. Although there is no industry standard for LED brightness or intensity, many manufacturers use terminology such as "ultra-bright" or "super-bright" to describe their lights. These lights have such a powerful beam that they can actually do damage to the human eye.

Color and Wavelength

Wavelength and color are other characteristics of LED lights. These lights have a pretty broad wavelength spectrum and thus can produce a number of different colors depending on the phosphorous or other compounds added to the encapsulation. The human eye is most responsive, however, to yellow, orange and red LED lights, probably why many come in those colors.

Efficiency

LEDs are solid-state devices with no moving parts. This allows the average LED light to operate for approximately 100,000 hours at relatively normal ambient temperature (25 degrees C). And unlike other incandescent bulbs, they can be turned on and off without undergoing too much wear and tear.

Putting It All Together

The basic construction of an LED flashlight is pretty straightforward. A simple closed circuit is used to charge the semiconductor diode, producing a brilliant, cool light. These lights illuminate our pathway in the dark, help us during power outages and signal for help. They are tremendous assets to a home, car or supply boxes.

The Solar-Powered Flashlight I Like Best

Last Week, I bought a solar-powered led flashlight online, and I'm so happy to find that it's of great use and makes my life much more convenient.

Presently, I always come back home as late as 21:00 because of the heavy workload. It was too dark to walk faster in the narrow street. As a result, I made a decision to buy a portable torch with me.

By chance, I found an exquisite flashlight on Dealextreme, a big B2C e-business website. I had known that everything is of free shipping at this online store, but it was not the low cost but the nice appearance of the flash torch that excited me!

The flashlight is features five bright white LED emitters so that it's bright enough to lighten my way home. And the best advantage is that I should pay little for its charging since the built-in batteries can be self-recharged by solar power.

Maybe I would not have to use this solar-powered flashlight (there will not be so much work to be done as this month), but I think the flashlight will be useful all the time. At least, I can put it on my desk as a decoration, don't I? After all, it's so pretty!

Lighting Your Coral

When adding coral to your aquarium, it is crucial to remember that they require more light than most other life-forms you might want to add specifically because they feed on fatty and amino acids created through photosynthesis by an algae living in symbiosis with them called the Zooxanthellae. Without light, therefore, zooxanthellae cannot produce food and your coral will perish.

There are some species of coral that can survive with the normal amount of lighting, so for the beginner, you may want to stick to these species. Specifically, Mushroom Coral and Coral Polyps can survive with normal lighting techniques.

Conversely, species such as SPS (Small Polyp Stony Coral) that include Acoropora, Montipora, Porites, Brain Coral, Bubble Coral, Elegance Coral, Cup Coral, Torch Coral, and Trumpet Coral require far greater intensity with lighting, making them a substantially greater challenge for the aquarium hobbyist, especially considering more light usually means more harmful algae will grow in the tank.

The best lighting technique to keep your coral safe is the light emitting diode (LED) technology, which has begun to make the former standards: gas and filament based lighting systems obsolete. Though initially more expensive then gas and filament systems, over time they save money because they use less power and have a longer lifespan, meaning less replacement costs and hassle.

It is important to note that the zooxanthellae's photosynthesis process require light of two different colors: red and blue, which is why aquarium lights often will exude a purple hue, as most of them provide both colors as an industry standard.

While it is essential to have the minimum amount of light in order to meet the xooxanthellae's minimum requires for photosynthesis to work, it is also important to note that it has an upper limit tolerance as well. Your lights must therefore be in the middle or bad things will happen to both the zooxanthellae, and as a byproduct, the coral.

While not an exact science as how much or how little light depends on how many xooxanthellae reside in the coral, and that can be anywhere from thousands to millions, but a good place to start would be to ensure that your intensity minimum is 3000-lux and that you don't go above 120,000-lux. While this may seem to be a quite wide and open range, you will have to make determinations base on the behavior of your coral.

Good quality types of lamps to use would include florescent, and you should use six lamps, or if your aquarium is not wide enough for that, then it is recommended that you instead utilize high output lamps, which are more expensive, but necessary. You should replace these bulbs every six months. Power compact florescent lamps, which are U-shaped, are an even better option, and you will only need four.

Coral is an excellent addition to any aquarium, and there are many fish that enjoy coral as a food source. Regardless if you have added coral to your aquarium to survive or as sustenance for your fish, you have to have the right lighting or it won't survive.

Infrared Security Cameras for Surveillance and Tips for Choosing the Right Camera

Infrared security cameras are great for both day and night surveillance. Most infrared security cameras today provide a full color picture during the day then switch to B/W (black and white) at night. They use an array of infrared LEDs around the lens to provide a B/W image even in complete darkness. They should not be confused with thermal cameras which use radiated heat signatures to provide an image. They emit light only visible to the cameras sensor onto objects in dark areas or rooms. This results in very good image quality in low or no light that cannot be achieved by standard security cameras.

There are a wide variety of infrared security cameras. There are those specifically designed for indoor use, while others are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Outdoor models are more durable than the indoor models. They are built to withstand harsh external elements like rain, wind and the hot sun. They can also come in a variety of shapes and sizes with fixed or adjustable zoom lenses and even OSD (on screen display).

When shopping for an infrared security camera you want to consider the resolution of the image, size of lens provided and the infrared distance. Obviously the higher the resolution of the camera the better the image quality but that should not be your only consideration. The size of the lens will determine your field of view or viewing angle. While the number and size of the LEDs along with the lens will determine how far you can see in darkness.

Generally for nearby surveillance of 20 feet to 30 feet a 3.6mm to 4.3mm lens is good. This will give you a wide field of view and good detail out to 25 to 30 feet. If you need to see detail at a further distance of 35 to 50 feet you would probably want to go with a 6mm or 8mm lens. Keep in mind that the larger the lens size for any given distance the more detail you will see but your field of view will be smaller.

Most websites will state the maximum distance the infrared illumination will shine. You should always choose a camera that has more infrared distance than you need. This is because the illumination at its maximum distance will not be as bright. As an example if you need to see 80 feet in the dark choose a camera with 100 feet or more illumination.

Infrared security cameras make a good choice for video surveillance. They are not difficult to install and can give you a very good picture whether indoors or outdoors, with no light or daylight. They are also reasonably priced with many models starting under $100.00. Just determine the area you need to cover and nighttime distance you need to see. If the area is large you may want to consider using a couple of cameras with larger size lenses instead of just one with a wide angle, this will provide more detail in the picture.

Skiing Holidays:-The Little Things In Japan Are So Wonderfully Fascinating

The little things in Japan are so wonderfully fascinating.  When you buy a train ticket and the old man behind the counter calculates the price with an abacus in lieu of a calculator. It's addition as art.  You come away from Japan with the over riding feeling that this is a stylised country, where things are done deliberately and beautifully.  Art is everywhere, calligraphy and fonts and Hello Kitty advertising aesthetics.  People's front yards are sculptured, full of perspective-bending trees trained using bonsai techniques.  And on top of that you get to ride then soak in spring fed hot tubs.  I'm not sure that I can leave.

We broke camp at Niseko – the resort that flipped Japan from the Land of the Rising Sun to the Land of the Puking Powder – and made away across Hokkaido to Furano.  In the early Naughties when Niseko started to really rock, Furano was spoken about as the next-Niseko. The ridiculousness of being the next anything aside, unfortunately for those that were pushing for this transformation it coped some bad press about the vigilance of its patrollers.   Fortunately for us this was either A: unfounded, B: exaggerated, or C: the result of commercial espionage.  Whatever the reason, it has meant that the mooted explosion of foreigners in Furano never really materialised. In the couple of days that we have been here we have been greeted by all-but-non-existent lift lines, fresh snow and some tremendous terrain.

The tale of the tape says that Furano gets less snow than Niseko but being north of Sapporo and not as affected by the weather patterns of the sea it's that little bit colder, and that little bit drier. My elementary grasp of maths leads me to the following equation; cold + dry x 8m annual = amazing pow. And then on top of this they also hold bragging rights to the steepest in-bound runs in Hokkaido, maybe in Japan.  It's definitely the steepest that we have been on.  This is a huge bonus when you think the only complaint you ever hear about Japan – and even then it's clearly not a deal breaker – is that the snow is like riding clouds but the fall lines could fall a little faster.

After waiting in Niseko for some snow and then leaving when it was dumping our brows were furrowed slightly when we got to Furano to find that it hadn't caught the same storm.  It was a relief to wake in the morning to about 10cm of fresh at the base of the mountain.  Whipping out my rudimentary maths again we concluded that it would be three times that up top and so scoffed a quick breakfast and headed for the hills.

Now the experience of any mountain is made better by the addition of local knowledge.  There is nothing to compare to being led straight to all the sweet spots.  From that first morning and for the next couple of days we were blessed by the guiding hand of Ken from the Tourism Board not only during the day up on the slopes but also at night when we were kicking around the town.  That's another wonderful thing that Furano has to offer, a town.  Not a resort but a town filled with all the culture and amenity one would expect.  It's waiting at the end of every day for you to explore culture and events, little bars and restaurants.  And everything is brimming with the energy of people living their lives, not a constructed, transient environment.  When you come to a place that is as fascinating and engaging as Japan, diving as deeply into the culture as you can should be a must.

So helped by Ken we made the most of what Furano has to offer and with the hill mostly populated by the Japanese army (sorry, self defence force) who were busy falling over on the lower slopes, there wasn't much in the way of competition.  I cant remember once waiting in a line for a lift and this was the norm we were told despite the fact the sky was blue and the snow was fresh.

It's the combination of the snow conditions, the lack of crowds to take all the lines and the access to a real town that imbues Furano with a magnetism that inspires visitors to come back.  Indeed most of the foreigners that we met were return visitors. Retirees, families and Pepsi Max drinking hell-men alike, many that we talked to were on their third, fourth, even their eighth trips.  For us though, that's it. That's all.  For this year.  That's a crucial caveat as I reckon the Furano demographic is kinda representative of Japan as a whole in that there aren't many people who ski here just the once.  And I'd hate to be the one to start that trend.

I'll sign off with my top four tricks and traps for young players in Japan.  

Vending machines can satisfy (almost) all of your vices, and that's a thing of true beauty.

Don't pack shoes with laces.  The smart money is on the sturdily treaded slip-ons as good graces in Japan require you to step in and out of your shoes all day. Tying laces is only fun for four year olds.

If you skied exclusively in Japan your bases would love you forever.  No kidding, it's harder to gouge a chunk from your base than it is to find a neon-free street in Tokyo.  Unfortunately though, the only thing Japan has less of than rocks is ATMs.  And to make matters worse it's also not a very credit card friendly joint.  Pretty much your only option apart from VISA cash advances and their budget-blowing fees are the machines in Post Offices.  Don't expect you'll be able to find one everywhere and cash up when you can.

Language is important.  The simple power of ‘hello', ‘good bye', ‘please' and ‘thank you' cannot be overstated.  Extending one's vocab brings even greater joy but a heads up; the words for ‘scary' and ‘cute' are unfortunately very similar.  To the untrained ear it's "ko-why-e" versus "ka-why-e".  Take care with compliments in bars.

Big Coppitt and Lower Keys in Florida

The Florida Keys is an archipelago in the southeast United States with about 1700 islands beginning at the tip of the Florida peninsula and extending to the south southwest and then to Key West. The islands divide the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and define one edge of Florida Bay. The southern tip of Key West is just 98 miles from Cuba and the climate is defined as tropical.

The area is divided into 4 major areas, the Upper Keys, the Middle Keys, the Lower Keys and the Outlaying islands. Big Coppitt is a census designated place and an unincorporated community on an island of the same name in the Lower Keys. The name is said to de derived from "coppice" meaning thicket. Us route 1 (or the Overseas Highway) crosses the key between East Rockland and Saddlebunch Keys. In the 2000 census there were 1,108 households out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present and 38.5% were non families in the Lower Keys regions. All areas are considered to be suburbs of Key West.

The Keys are the exposed portions of an ancient coral reef and there is very little sand. The northernmost island arising form the formation is Elliott Key. The Keys have taken their present form as the result of drastic changes in sea level during the ice age some 130,000 years ago. There were several lines of reefs and the reef formed Key Largo limestone that is on the surface between Key Biscayne and Elliott Keys.

Starting about 100.000 years ago the glaciers began lowering sea levels an exposed the coral reef and surrounding marine sediments. By 15,000 years ago the sea level had dropped to 300 to 350 feet and the exposed reefs and sediments were heavily eroded. The acidic water dissolved some of the limestone and it was redeposited as a denser cap rock. This formed the foundation for the lower Keys.

The main chain of islands can be reached by automobile on the Overseas Highway which is a 127 mile section of US Highway 1. It runs from Key West to Maine. ??The highway was built parallel to the original route of the Overseas Railway which was not rebuilt following the Labor Day hurricane of 1935. Before the hurricane road sections and highway bridges allowed automobile traffic to travel from Miami to Lower Matecumbe Key where a car ferry connected with another roadway section through the Lower Keys. After the hurricane some of the railway bridges were converted to carry highway roadbeds. In the 1980's new highway bridges were built alongside but many of the original railroad and highway bridges remain and are used as pedestrian fishing piers.

The overseas Railroad was opened in 1910. Until that time the Keys were accessible only by water. When the Labor Day hurricane made landfall near Islamorada in the Upper Keys on Labor Day Sept 2, 1935 a reported 600 people were killed. The new bridges under construction to connect a highway though the entire Keys were turned into death camps for the World War I veterans working at the construction camp. The evacuation train failed and more than 200 veterans perished. The Overseas Railway was damaged so badly that the tracks were never rebuilt.

The Lower Keys and Big Coppitt were connected to the Middle Keys by the Seven Mile Bridge, one of the longest bridges constructed in the area. After the destruction of the Keys railway by the Labor Day Hurricane the railroad, bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge were converted to automobile roadway.

With the takeover of Cuba by Fidel Castro many refugees fled to South Florida. Key West had traditionally had strong likes with Cuba and large number Cubans settled there. The Lower Keys also attract Cubans fleeing repression and poverty in cub and stories of the "boat people' coming ashore in the Lower Keys in not uncommon.

The climate in the Keys is closer to that of the Caribbean than the rest of Florida. The Upper Keys islands are remnants of large coral reefs but the Lower Keys are composed of sandy type accumulations of limestone grains produced by plants and marine organisms.

The natural habitats of the Keys are upland forests, inland wetlands and shoreline zones. Soil ranges from sand to rich decomposed leaf litter. Rain falling through leaf debris becomes acidic and dissolves holes in the cap rock where soil accumulates and tree roots find purchase. The Keys has distinctive plant and animal species some are found nowhere else in American. The climate also allows many imported plant to thrive. Some exotic species which arrived as landscape plants now invade and threaten natural area.

The well known a very sour Key Limes was apparently introduced from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The tree grows vigorously and has thorns and produces small yellow fruit.

The Lower Keys around Big Coppitt and Big Pine are home to unique animal species including the Key deer. They are protected by the national Key Deer Refuge, and the American crocodile. Dry Tortugas national park is one of the most isolated and therefore well preserved in the world. When the Spanish explorers arrived there was no fresh water to be found and the small humpbacked shaped islands looked like tortoise shell from a distance

Tropical cyclones present special dangers and challenges to the entire Keys. Because no area of the islands is more than 20 feet above sea level and water surrounds them nearly every neighborhood is subject to devastating flooding as well and hurricane winds.

Because of the treat from storm surge evacuations are routinely ordered. Evacuations depend on causeways and the two lane highway to the mainland. It is estimated that is takes 12 to 24 hours to evacuate the entire population of all of the islands

Life in the Keys is laid back and the hurricane bravado is a part of that atmosphere... The major industries are tourism and fishing. Ecotourism is also part of this with many visitors scuba diving in the area's protected waters. Anew ferry now takes riders between Key West and Fort Myers due north on the mainland.

The Big Coppitt Key and No Name Keya areas are home to the Key Deer. This endangered species lives only in the Lower Florida Keys and is a subspecies of the White tiled Deer.

This deer can be recognized by the characteristic smaller size. Adult makes usually weigh for 55 to 75 pounds. The adult females or does usually weigh between 45 to 65 pounds, in contrast to the up to 300 pound Deer of the upper Midwest. The deer is a reddish brown to grey brown and the males grow antlers and shed between February and March. The antlers regrow in June. Key Deer can easily swim between islands. Living in close proximity to humans the Key Deer has little of the natural fear of man shown by most of their mainland cousins. The deer are found in resident's yards and along roadsides where they much tasty pants and flowers. There are many car deer collisions and the deer are more active at night. It is not unusual to see them a dusk and dawn, on lightly inhabited No Name Key, Big Pine Key and big Coppitt. Some are so tame that they will accept food directly from humans but feeding the deer is prohibited by law.

Mating may occur at any time of the year but usually peaks during September to November. Key deer have a relatively low reproductive rate.

The range of the key Deer originally encompassed all of the lower Florida Keys where standing water pool exist but is now limited to a stretch of the Lower Keys keys. The Deer only reside permanently reside in island s Of big Pine, Cudjoe, West Summerland, big Torch, Howe, Little Pine, Little torch, Middle Torch, No Name and sugarloaf. They also can be found on the other islands but are only there in the dry season where there is a lack of fresh water. The Deer use all islands during the wet season when drinking water is more generally available. Key Deer inhabit nearly all habitats within their range, including pine rock lands, hardwood hammocks, mangroves and freshwater wetland's They feed on over 150 types of plants but mangroves and thatch palm berries make up the most important part of their diet.

Key Deer were hunted as a food supply by native tribes, passing sailors, and early settlers. The hunting of Key Deer was banned in 1939 but widespread poaching and habitat destruction caused the subspecies to plummet to near extinction by the 1950's. The National Key Deer Refuge, a federally administered national Wildlife Refuge operated by the Wildlife Service was established in 1957.
