I also would like to know about laws that prohibit the use of other spy bugs, cameras, and transmitters?

The FCC regulates transmissions in general. If a transmitter is legally transmitting,then it is a violation of the law to jam that transmission. So the question about spy technology depends on whether it is a legal transmission.

In this case I would presume that the transmitting equipment is itself either licensed or listed as exempt by the FCC (almost always the latter). So you cannot simply block all transmissions. However if it is used as a "spy" camera then it transmitting from inside a private facility or residence and the owner of the premises would be permitted to jam the signal in so far as it did not jam other legitimate signals on the same frequency.

What Your LED Flashlight Can Do

The bright light of an LED flashlight can be an invaluable tool when on a camping or hunting trip, and a potential life saver in a home or car emergency. The power and efficiency of these light sources has made them incredibly popular throughout the world. How did these bright lights become so popular? How does the LED bulb in the flashlight actually work? Science and practicality have come together to create these innovative light sources - it may just be a good idea to know why.

What is an LED?

To understand how an LED flashlight works it is important to understand what an LED light is. LED stands for light-emitting diode. It is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current passes through it, like a simple circuit. This circuit produces electroluminescence, which can be infrared, visible, or ultraviolet, and a number of different colors depending on the make up and condition of the semiconducting material used. These lights are often very small, typically less than 1 mm. Manufacturers usually add special optics or lenses to the chip to help with reflection, creating an incredibly powerful beam for the size of the bulb.

LED lights are embedded in a high-impact epoxy, which makes them virtually indestructible and therefore perfect for handheld lights. There are no loose or moving parts either. LED lights also produce no heat, allowing them to be used for long periods of time without concern of burning out.

LED Light Advantages

LED light technology has certain advantages that help it stand out for flashlight and lamp use - visibility, intensity, color and efficiency.

Visibility

LED lights naturally emit a high level of light, called luminous intensity. This visibility is increased by adding chips to the encapsulation or using secondary optics to distribute light. For most LED flashlights or lanterns, there are a number of individual light sources in a single lens.

Intensity

The intensity of the light is another characteristic of LED lights. The light output varies depending on the type of chip and encapsulation that is used. Although there is no industry standard for LED brightness or intensity, many manufacturers use terminology such as "ultra-bright" or "super-bright" to describe their lights. These lights have such a powerful beam that they can actually do damage to the human eye.

Color and Wavelength

Wavelength and color are other characteristics of LED lights. These lights have a pretty broad wavelength spectrum and thus can produce a number of different colors depending on the phosphorous or other compounds added to the encapsulation. The human eye is most responsive, however, to yellow, orange and red LED lights, probably why many come in those colors.

Efficiency

LEDs are solid-state devices with no moving parts. This allows the average LED light to operate for approximately 100,000 hours at relatively normal ambient temperature (25 degrees C). And unlike other incandescent bulbs, they can be turned on and off without undergoing too much wear and tear.

Putting It All Together

The basic construction of an LED flashlight is pretty straightforward. A simple closed circuit is used to charge the semiconductor diode, producing a brilliant, cool light. These lights illuminate our pathway in the dark, help us during power outages and signal for help. They are tremendous assets to a home, car or supply boxes.

I just finished watching "Frankenhood," a hilarious new DVD scheduled for release by Lionsgate on May 5; and I can tell you that this film consists of ninety two minutes of nonstop laughter and sheer fun.

The plot of the film is not very complicated although at times, it borders on the unbelievable. But hey, that's what makes watching it so much fun! Motown (DeRay Davis) and Darius (Jasper Redd) work in a morgue, trading put-downs and toiling among the most undemanding of customers. Outside of their decidedly dreary jobs, the two dream of bigger and better things. If only they could win the $25,000 prize that will go to the winners of the upcoming 3-on-3 Streetball Tournament. One night, having been demoted to the graveyard shift, they catch their semi-sane colleague Franklin (JB Smoove) in a dark alley using the auto battery of Motown's precious Gremlin to bring to life a monstrous dead man (Bob Sapp,) whose heart Franklin has just replaced. Now if they can just get their new mutant friend to play basketball, the basketball tournament is theirs! Teach a dead man how to play basketball? Yep, that's the plan! Now you know why I say the plot is a little unbelievable in places.

Without question, Davis and Redd provide the engine that keeps the film running at top speed. They work smoothly together and their timing is excellent. But in my opinion, Bob Sapp had the toughest role to play; portraying a dead man who is try to relearn the facts of life while mastering the nuances of the fast break and the slam dunk. All these things and more, he accomplishes credibly.

Speaking of the facts of life, there is more than enough love interest to go around, thanks to a bevy of toothsome beauties that include Drew Sidora, the up and coming actress, singer, and recording artist. I assure you that that if anyone would be capable of raising me from the dead it would be her!

The timing for the release of "Frankenhood" couldn't be better. Spring is in the air and before you know it, summer will be here. Soon it will be time to chill out and enjoy the simpler things in life. "Frankenhood" fits that scenario perfectly; nothing serious, nothing complicated, just plain fun to watch!

Standardize This! 10 Technology Messes That Need Fixing

Enough with bickering cell phone technologies, messaging systems that won't talk, incompatible file formats, and TV remotes that spread like kudzu across your coffee table. We've been dealing with some of these problems for more than a decade, and it's time for things to improve.

Here are ten technologies that cry out for standardization--tomorrow if possible, though yesterday would be even better.

1. One World, One Plug

Over the years I've used hundreds of chargers, plugs, AC/DC adapters, power bricks, and wall warts for my laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS units, and other gadgets. No two were interchangeable. It's not merely stupid, it's a landfill nightmare.

USB-based AC adapters are a step forward, but you still have to deal with six kinds of USB connectors. If your camera uses a Mini-A USB charger and your smart phone is Micro-B, you're just as stranded as if they used completely unrelated chargers. You may be able to buy a "universal" charger that lets you plug in a laptop and other devices, but only if the vendor supplies adapters designed for your particular gadgets. What a pain.

What the world needs now isn't love sweet love--it's a power adapter that works with every portable device. Last year, most of the big handset makers agreed to standardize on Micro-USB chargers by 2012. (The most prominent exception? Apple, of course.) For the past three years, groups like Green Plug have been lobbying consumer electronics companies to adopt a single plug standard, but so far they have little to show for their efforts. 2. A Real Universal Remote

Like everyone I know, I have a basket crowded with remotes (including several not-so-universal "universal" ones) on my coffee table. All of them do more or less the same thing, but each one is slightly different. Does every TV, DVD, DVR, set-top box, and stereo manufacturer really need to redesign the wheel?

We need one remote that controls everything and doesn't require a 45-minute video tutorial, tedious trial-and-error experimentation, memory-hogging software, constant updating, or the services of a Home A/V specialist. That, or maybe Project Natal-like gesture recognition, so we can just wave our hands to control our A/V gear. Even better: brain implants. That way my wife and I can fight over what to watch without having to speak to each other.

3. Virtual Instruments That Rock Around the Clock

When I'm down for a virtual gig--whether I'm due to play Rock Band on the Xbox 360 or Guitar Hero III on the PS3--I want to be able to strap on my ax and go. Sadly, only a handful of guitars and drum kits work across multiple rhythm-game titles on a single console system (see this confusing chart for details--or this one, or this one). The good news? The situation is steadily improving, as Harmonix and Activision belatedly recognize the folly of playing battle of the band instruments.

Looking for virtual instruments that span not only the games but all the consoles? Shine on, you crazy diamond. You might as well wait for the Beatles to reunite.

4. A Single Data-File Format

Cross-platform compatibility? Feh. Mac and Windows PCs have coexisted for a quarter of a century, and yet people still have problems moving files between them--and that's without the commplications presented by Linux and other computing platforms. Want to move data between different types of applications or open a file stored in an older format? You'll have better luck printing it out and retyping it.

Most of the 1000+ file formats that now exist are native to a single application. We need a single editable format that all platforms can display accurately (and with full formatting) and that the user can move easily between applications. No tedious file conversions, no mystery fonts, no deciding which arcane ASCII character set to use. Just save it, send it, and open it--and no surprises inside the box.

For the past four years, the OpenDocument Format Alliance has been promoting an XML-based format that makes Office Suite documents accessible across platforms and applications. ODF enjoys endorsements from international governments and support in products like Google Docs and Open Office. But until Microsoft beefs up its support for ODF, that movement isn't going anywhere.

5. Smarter Smartphone Batteries (and Keyboards)

If your flashlight runs out of juice, you can pop down to the local Kwik-E-Mart and get some C batteries. If your TV remote conks out, Apu will happily sell you some AAs. But when your cell phone battery expires, you have to contact your handset manufacturer or carrier to get a replacement. Worse, you can't swap batteries between different handsets. Are individual cell phone models really so special that each requires its own battery technology?

The IEEE's Cell Phone Battery Working Group is set to hold its first meeting this month, primarily to improve battery life and to devise standardized packaging for smartphones, but maybe they'll seize the opportunity to address interoperability, too. Unfortunayely, considering the pace at which the IEEE usually ratifies standards, cell phone brain implants are likely to come sooner than a single-battery standard.

Improve Battery Life by Hibernating SSDs

If you have a Macbook Air (or any other laptop, for that matter) with a solid-state drive, you can increase its battery life by forcing it to hibernate instead of sleep.

Generally, Macs only hibernate (which means they store the existing system state to disk and then power off) when the battery is almost completely drained. At all other times, they sleep--meaning the system state is stored in RAM, and the machine goes into a low-power mode. Waking from sleep takes less time than restarting and restoring from hibernation.

But having the machine go fully off instead of just to sleep really can improve dell Latitude D600 battery life. And because solid state drives start up exceptionally fast, restoring from hibernation is quick (five or so seconds, in my experience) compared to restoring from a standard drive.

There are several utilities available (such as Jinx's Smart Sleep, which installs as a preference pane and is Snow Leopard compatible) that will cause your Mac to hibernate instead of merely sleeping. Remember that when you want your Mac to emerge from hibernation, you must press the power button, rather than tapping any key on the keyboard.

Laptop Battery Life: Tips & Tricks

Having a laptop is all about portability and being able to compute from anywhere — right up until your battery dies. So here are a few road warrior tips for getting the last drop of power out of your laptop battery.

The first one is by far the easiest. Simply dim your screen. Lowering the brightness by 50% will dramatically increase battery life.

Next, if you're not using the Internet, turn off your WiFi. WiFi is a huge drain on your battery. Even when you're not using the Internet and even when you're not connected to a WiFi network, your computer is powering the WiFi transceiver and using precious batter power. So, if you're not actually doing something online, turn your WiFi off.

Along the same lines, if you have Bluetooth accessories that you are not using, like an external mouse or a headset, turn them off too. There's no point in burning battery life with Bluetooth if you don't really need to. To squeeze every ounce of battery power out of your laptop, don't use any Bluetooth devices at all. And, certainly limit the number of Bluetooth data transfers you do while on battery.

Next, some computers will spin your hard drive even if the programs you are using don't need to access it. Go into power management in control panel or the systems preferences for Mac users and let the computer put your hard drive to sleep if it is not being accessed. This is a huge battery saver.

Then, there's the dell U4873 laptop battery itself. If you find that you're always working on battery power, make sure you purchase the most powerful extra (or new) battery for your computer. Don't be surprised if the manufacturer does not make battery. Battery specialists routinely offer better, more powerful, replacement batteries than the ones that ship with your hardware. The specification you are looking for is "mAh" which is an abbreviation for milliamp hours. The higher the rating, the longer the cell can provide power. If you have a choice between an 1800mAh battery and a 2400mAh battery for your computer, choose the 2400mAh battery, even if it costs more than 25% more. It will be worth it.

If you must play a video from your computer, do it from the hard drive instead of playing a DVD. The hard drive uses less battery power. And, if you know you are going to be on a plane or a bus with no hope of plugging in, transfer your video to a jump drive (USB 2.0 drive, thumb drive, etc.) and play the video from the USB drive with the hard drive turned off. This will use the least amount of battery power. Planning your entertainment in advance is a good idea. Also, remember your iPod/mp3 player is for music, not your computer — not when you're trying to save battery life.
