2.Pyranometers - measure solar radiation and require direct sunlight. They should be positioned out in the open where the sun will beat down on them regularly.

3.Anemometers - measure wind speed and need to be placed where the wind is unobstructed by other objects. Typically, anemometers are mounted a little more than thirty feet off the ground, such as on a roof, and face north.

4.Hygrometers - determine the humidity in the air and are used in conjunction with thermometers. Hygrometers should be arranged near thermometers.

5.Thermometers - measure air temperature and should be positioned four to six feet above ground in a shaded area but away from trees. If you opt to place your thermometer on a building, you should pick a place on a north-facing wall below the eaves to protect it from sun and rain.

6.UV Ray Sensors - monitor the harmful ultra-violet rays projected by the sun. Over exposure to such rays can lead to serious health problems like skin cancer and cataracts. UV ray sensors can be mounted on a wall or inserted into the ground.

Winter Beauty and Skin Care Tips

Winter comes and rings the message of buying peanuts that would be cracked beside the fireplace. The brightness of the winter sun reflecting off of snow and ice can lead to damage, spots, and skin cancer just as easily as in the heat of summer. Always use a sunscreen before going outside. Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. If you don't want to invest in an expensive humidifying system, smaller, relatively inexpensive humidifiers can be obtained at a local drug store. Placing two or three of these around your home will help to humidify the dry air.

Symptoms of Winter Skin: -

1. Dry Skin

4. Redness

Skin care tips for winter: -

1.    Sun protection. Outdoor winter weather conditions, such as wind or sun reflecting off snow and ice, can be very damaging to the skin. In winters, moisturize your skin with good moisturizers and cold creams. It should be applied to your face as well as the body, and at least thrice a day, especially before going to bed.  
2.    Winter wear. Because of the cold weather, we usually bundle up more. As we go in and out of temperature-controlled rooms or the thermometer rises and falls during the day, we tend to be overdressed, causing moisture to be lost through perspiration.
3.    Before taking bath, apply a little coconut oil on your body to get rid off dryness and chaps. If you’re using soap, then use a creamy one which will provide extra suppleness to your skin. Bathing do's and don'ts. Due to seasonal cold and flu viruses, general achiness, or just wanting to warm up, we shower or bathe more frequently in hot water in the winter. This contributes to itchiness by drawing additional moisture from the skin.
4.    Moisturize to the max. Because indoor and outdoor conditions are drier in winter, use moisturizers more frequently; you may also want to switch to heavier emollients and creams during this season.
5.    Lip service. Chapped lips are a common problem in winter months. We tend to make the problem worse by licking our lips to give them moisture, but, as that evaporates they tend to dry out even more. To add to the problem, our lips tend to him as we age and are more susceptible to cracking.

Home Remedies for Glowing Skin: -

1. Take white of an egg and add some honey to it. Apply the mixture on the face. It helps to remove the tanning from your face.
2. Make a mixture by adding oats, honey, yoghurt and ground almonds. Apply this mixture on your face for five minutes and wash with lukewarm water. You will notice the difference in your skin before and after.
3. Make a paste of mint leaves and almonds by adding warm water to it. Leave it till it gets dry and then wash it off.
4. Mix some tomato juice with honey and apply it on your skin for sometime and then wash it with fresh water.
5. Take some fenugreek seeds and make of paste with milk. Apply it on the face and leave it for ten minutes. Then wash it with warm water.

iPod Basics and Purchasing Guide

So, you are looking to purchase an iPod? Please take the time to read this brief article which will at best help you get the most out of your new iPod, and at the least, help you avoid mistakes and misconceptions. This article is written out of my personal experience with iPods.

1. What is an iPod?

An iPod is a MP4 player, not a MP3 player. Basically, the MP4 format is a proprietary format only recognized by Apple products, such as iPods and QuickTime™. In order for music to play on an iPod, it must be in MP4 format. Apple's music download site, iTunes™, offers music only in the MP4 format. The iTunes™ software which comes with an iPod will convert MP3 music files to MP4 format, so they will play on your iPod. An iPod will not play MP3 files, neither will Windows Media Player play MP4 files. Both the Nano and Video iPod will store and display photos, but a video iPod is needed to play video files.

2. What is iTunes?

® Apple hosts the world's largest music download site called iTunes™. As of March 2006, over 1 billion files have been downloaded for use in iPods. Pretty amazing. This site offers music files for 99 cents each, and you need not download an entire album, but can select only the music files you want and download it into your computer. The iTunes™ software in your computer is the vehicle by which files are loaded into the iPod. Simply place your iPod into its dock (which is attached via USB to your computer), start iTunes™ and your iPod is updated automatically with new music, playlists, Podcasts and so forth. I have tried other music download sites and have not found any which I like as well as iTunes™, even though they may offer music cheaper than iTunes™. A basic search will locate alternative music download sites.

There are a variety of other files available on iTunes™ called Podcasts. These are audio or video files which include news broadcasts, informational programs, comedy programs and many others. The great majority of Podcasts are free, and others are not.

3. What You Get

iPods come with the following:

iPod with battery

Earphones (called "earbuds")

A generic pouch for the earbuds

A docking station (to transfer files and charge the iPod)

iTunes™ software CD

Instruction manual

That is all.

4. What You will Need

Every iPod user will need a case, and we strongly recommend a screen protector.

Both the iPod Nano and 5th generation (5G) Video iPod are susceptible to scratching, and the black units seem to show scratches worse than the white ones. This is true of both the iPod housing AND the screen. Nothing is worse than having your iPod blemished with unsightly scratches, especially when it is easily avoidable by using a case and screen protector. Having your unprotected iPod floating around inside your purse or in your pocket will absolutely cause your iPod to quickly accumulate scratches both on the housing and on the screen. Be warned! This is not really a defect, but just the way it is.

5. Using iPods in your Car

Most people quickly realize that it would be great to be able to have their iPod play music through their car stereo. No longer would they have to mess with CDs or tapes. How many CDs would you have to carry to have your entire music library with you in the car? You can take it all in the palm of your hand with an iPod. So, how does one play music through their car stereo? There are several options.

First, there are cables available for most car stereos which plug into the iPod and the other end of the cable plugs into a port on the back of the stereo. Removal of the stereo is usually required to accomplish this task. Also, the wire used to connect your iPod is exposed. It does, however, sound great! Some car stereos have a line input on the faceplate. In this case, all one needs to do is use an adaptive cable from the headphone jack of the iPod to the input on the stereo. In both of these scenarios, the iPod will run on its internal battery unless a car charger is used as well.

Second, (and by far the most popular) method, is to use an FM transmitter to transmit a signal from your iPod to your FM radio and play it as if it were a radio station. There are a variety of FM transmitters from several manufacturers. We recommend using a unit which is a dock and not a plug into the iPod port. The plug-in units consume power from the iPod battery and seem to produce a weak signal resulting in poor audio quality. A docking unit (such as the Griffin RoadTrip™) holds your iPod in place, charges the iPod and produces a strong signal. The RoadTrip™ also features a removable FM module which allows it to plug into your computer. You can therefore listen to FM radio through your computer without having to install software.

6. Using iPods at Home

iPods can easily play through your home stereo. One can simply use an adaptive cable which plugs into the headphone jack of the iPod and into the stereo input of your stereo. In this setup, the iPod is operating on battery power unless the iPod is also plugged into a charger.

Docking your iPod is the preferred method, and there are a variety of docking solutions available. The iPod docks into a base which charges the iPod, and an output jack on the base connects the iPod to your stereo via a cable. Some units offer remote controls for your iPod and others do not, but often these remotes are weak and have very limited range and field of reception. We have found that some television or stereo programmable remote control units can be programmed to work with certain iPod docking systems, while others work partially or not at all. It is worth trying if you have a programmable remote.

Some docking units also have a video output for use with the 5G Video iPod, which allows one to watch videos or photos stored in the iPod on a television. We have found that the picture quality is poor on large screen televisions, but ok on a smaller screen. Using a dock with S-video output will provide a far superior picture than units using an RCA connector. As of now, iPods do not support high definition.

There are speaker systems which contain their own amplifier and operate as a stand-alone unit with an iPod. These are not all created equal. Our testing has found that a high price does not always equal high quality. We have found $150 systems which in our opinion sound significantly superior to $400 units. It is best to listen to the various systems before making your selection; or if buying online, follow the recommendations of the seller IF they have tested the systems and can provide you with recommendations based on testing results.

There are alarm clock radios (such as iHome™) which allow you to go to sleep listening to your iPod and wake up to it as well. We have tested the iHome™ and others, and found iHome™ to be our unit of choice.

7. Loading Movies into Your 5G Video iPod

When the Video iPod first came out, I gave it a high ranking on the "Dumb-O-Meter." Who wants to watch a movie on a 2.5 inch screen? However, after having used one, I have recanted my original opinion. It is now my iPod of choice. Unfortunately, iTunes™ and other MP4 download sites usually have little to offer in the way of legal movies which are formatted to play on an iPod. ITunes™ does have some short films, music videos and television shows, but not much else.

An easy solution for this is to convert your own DVDs into a format that the iPod can play. This can be accomplished by means of a software product called a DVD to iPod converter, such as Cucusoft, Lenogo and others. It is a simple process. Put a DVD in your computer, start the converter program and let it convert the movie to iPod format. Then, move the converted file into your iTunes™ video list. The next time you dock your iPod to your computer, it will load into your iPod. Some converter programs will also convert AVI, MPEG, MPG, WMV and other computer video formats for use on an iPod. This can allow you to convert your family videos and view them on your ipod. IPod movies are great for entertaining children on the road, for the business traveler stranded at an airport or for long airplane trips.

8. iPods and your PC

The music files for your iPod are stored in two places: in your PC in the iTunes™ program, and in your iPod. If your PC crashes and you loose your hard drive or have to reformat, you will loose EVERYTHING contained in your iTunes™ folder, including all of the songs you have purchased from iTunes™. Furthermore, iTunes™ does not offer the means to re-download songs you have purchased for free. You will have to buy them again. Neither does the iPod come with a means to load files into a computer. Fortunately, there are software programs which allow you to copy the contents of your iPod into a PC or from one iPod to another. These programs are usually titled "iPod to PC", or something similar. If your computer crashes, you will kick yourself for not having this program to restore your music files back into your computer.

The Hands of Time – Wall Clocks

The first time pieces started approximately 6,000 years ago for religious rituals. These devises were often candles and lamps. Farmers used sections of time for planting, growing and harvesting. It was not necessary to know the exact time.

The next instrument was Sundials from Egypt which marked the daily progress of the suns movement across the sky. This method was known to be accurate and useful. You can still purchase clocks that look like sundials today.  These were made of brass and only the rich could afford them. Briton transformed the brass dials with painted ones. These were inexpensive and clocks started being used for decoration as well as keeping time.

The first antique wall clocks were called lanterns. They were made out of brass, very heavy and were hung on walls. The concept of personal clocks was introduced in the 17th century.

All clocks have inner workings that would surprise and amaze you. We usually just take it for granted. There are analog clocks which have a face and hands and battery operated and there are digital clocks which are usually powered by an electric current with number displays.

Clocks keep cultures and societies united and functioning. Most western cultures value punctuality especially in the business community. There is a saying, “Time is money!”

Most clocks are mass produced now using cheaper materials such as plastic and metals. Most Americans find that clocks are cheaper then most paintings to help fill their empty walls. They also are a status symbol and bring elegance and character to one’s surroundings.

Some types of clocks, but not limited to are: Antique, Wall, Contemporary, Nautical, Atomic, Decorative, Traditional, Mantel, Grandfather, Cuckoo, Kitchen, Alarm, and others. There are two types of movement. They are mechanical and quartz battery operated. Some mechanical clocks produce a chiming sound. Clocks are also powered by solar energy, winding mechanism, and batteries.

Clocks may cover centuries but always give off visual pleasure. Without clocks life would be chaotic. Most humans wear them on their wrists, keep them next to their bed, and display them in almost every room of the house. Although often, they may never pay much thought to their clocks and their function.

The new iPod nano G5 with video camera, voice recorder and pedometer

The new fifth generation iPod nano is an electronics marvel! It packs so many powerful things is such an incredibly small and slick body that it is unbelievable.

All these years I shied away from acquiring an iPod for the simple reason that it may take up so much of my time that my writing and other interests may suffer for want of time. But when I read that the new iPod nano could record and play video clips besides recording voice and music, I sort of began looking at it more inquisitively. I began to read its specifications and its features. When I found that it had world clock which could show me the time in 4 cities around the Globe at the same time, stopwatch, alarms, calendar, memo notes, contacts and games it perked up my ears. But the final feature which broke my resistance was that it worked as a pedometer as well! That did it! I fell for it and bought it promptly.

But it was my first iPod and first Apple device at that. I had no clue how to work it. I read the skimpy instruction booklet which was made for persons well acquainted with Apple devices and not for a first timer like me. When I switched on the device, I could not run up and down the menu as I tried in vain to press the arrow keys which I was used to on TV remote. I was frustrated beyond words. After an hour or so I discovered the secret of scrolling up and down the menu just by an accident. You have to brush your finger in a circular motion around the wheel! Clockwise to go down and anticlockwise to go up the menu! Eureka! I felt elated. The button at the top of the iPod which I presumed was the ON-OFF button did no such thing. It was a sliding switch to reset the iPod in the unlikely event when it did hang and stopped working. Soon I became an expert. Press menu to go back one screen at a time, and draw ring with the thumb on the wheel to select the menu and press the central button to move to the next screen.

I downloaded and installed iTunes on my computer. The program pulled out the music on my hard disc and converted it for the iPod. I connected the iPod and it soon finished synching with the iTunes. Although iTunes did pick up 2 .mov  movie clips from my desk and put them on the iTunes screen they did not synch with the iPod and a msg showed up that it was not a format which could  be played on the iPod nano. Similarly I found that movies which I had shot using my Panasonic camera could not be synched onto the iPod. You need to convert movies to MP4 format to load on to the iPod. Later I searched the net and downloaded the software to convert movies for iPod. You can find it at www(.)e-zsoft(.)com. However the movies which I shot with the iPod could be downloaded on my computer and they did play well. The iPod camera is pretty good at taking movie clips, though the position of the lens is something one has to get used to.

I was not expecting the iPod to play the music without plugging in the earphones, and was pleasantly surprised when it did. The sound is good quality but the volume is barely audible through my shirt pocket. But you could hold the back of the iPod to your ear and enjoy the music properly without the earphones. The feature is welcome when listening to voice notes. With the earphones, the quality of the sound is excellent.

I was pleased to see that the audio out socket is a full sized one (3.5 mm) and not a mini. I could plug in my music system in and play the iPod music. It sounded great! However I did not get any success playing the video clip through the AV cable which I bought separately. It did not show up on my Panasonic home theatre projector. I took it back to the shop who tried it and said that although its black carton says iPod nano, it doesn’t seem to work on the newest version. He would give it me as and when he received the new AV cable compatible with the new nano. But this is undoubtedly a blotch on Apple Inc. Why do they not make the accessaries common to all? It just adds to inventory, makes the older accessaries obsolete and adds to the costs.

I switched on the iPod pedometer put it in my right-side trouser pocket and walked in my garden and began counting the steps. I stopped after a couple of rounds when I had counted 485 steps and looked at the iPod. It had recorded 487 steps! The pedometer actually works. I then held it in my hand trying to keep it as steady as possible as I walked watching the screen. The iPod faithfully recorded my every step. I wonder how Apple did this gimmick as I do not know of any pedometer which can do that.

I plugged in the iPod in my inMotion im5 Altech speaker dock and it played some wonderful music. But the radio did not work on the dock. I put in the earphones and the radio worked. It probably uses the earphone wires as some kind of an aerial. I then tried it out plugging the iPod in the speaker through the aux. input with a cord which could serve as an aerial, but the radio still did not work.

I then plugged in my iTrip FM transmitter onto the iPod and set the frequency at 100 MH. This worked well when my radio was switched on to the same frequency. I switched on the FM radio in my car and played from the iPod Louis Armstrong’s ‘When the Saints go Marching By’ as a salute to Apple Inc. for the iPod marvel.

On the whole I am happy that I bought the iPod nano. It will be my companion in my pocket wherever I go. I have shed my fear and the little aversion I had for the Apple product. Kudos to Apple Inc. for coming up with a fantastic practical and useful product for beyond the music-lover consumers!

Why isn't my phone ringing? This is the question that I awoke to this morning. In theory, this should be a time of abundance for my work. I know it's a bold statement, when so many others are also experiencing the effects of the economic downturn. To explain with a bit more humility, I have to wind the clock back to 2001.

It was in late 2001, when I recognized something was out of balance with the company I had been with since 1985. My position was director at a prominent telecommunications company and we were experiencing the fallout of the technology industry downturn, very similar to what all industries are experiencing today. As I observed the daily decision making process of our executives, it became clear to me that we were no longer operating from the core values that had supported this company's success for almost 100 years. Customers, employees, innovation, excellence & integrity were not important to the executives, who were clearly operating from fear. Now fear can sometimes lead to new and better opportunities when it becomes the stimulant for leaders to look inwardly and take responsibility for the situation. This includes reviewing past decisions that have contributed to the downturn and making a commitment to correct the mistakes. In accepting responsibility, there has to be a recommitment to the purpose, values and vision. This implies that everyone will have to make an adjustment, maybe sacrifice a bit, to get the company back on track for the long term. Instead, what I unfortunately observed were decisions that were based in fear of losing personal wealth and position. The company became a political snake pit, turning the collective leadership into reptiles fighting for survival. In 2002, after 17 years of leadership experiences, 3 presidential level recognitions, an international assignment and projects with some of the most committed people that I have ever known, I made the decision to leave. With no purpose, values, leadership or vision it was obvious to me that this company was dying a slow death. My guess at that time was that this 100-year-old company would be bankrupt in 5 years.

After taking some time off, I started a consulting business in 2003. It is the foundation of this work that leads me to believe that abundance is right around the corner. One of many things I learned during my corporate work experiences was that every success was rooted in our core values. Our teams always incorporated what was best for our customers and employees into our decision-making process. We created a space that empowered employees to capitalize on innovation and excellence. Lastly, we always promoted dialogue that enabled us to question integrity, without judging anyone. This led to a very healthy interaction amongst our employees and kept us all on our toes. While I recognized that our technology was state of the art, I knew it was that the employees who were responsible for our success. The output of any company is only as good as the organization behind it. Products and brands do not create long-term sustainability for companies, but people do. Interesting thing about this approach is that it actually attracts customers. Customers are intuitive. Customers will trust a company to the degree that they see a company's commitment to it's own. Customers’ interaction with a company’s employees gives them all the information they need to assess the health of the company. Would you buy a dog that you saw attacking one of its puppies? Could you trust such a dog around your loved ones? A life-depleting environment will scare customers away. Conversely, life-nurturing environments attract customers for life, thus creating a long-term sustainable business. These concepts have been the foundation of the change initiatives offered to my clients during the past 6 years. Along the way, I have met others who offer similar services for their clients and it has been rewarding to learn that I'm not alone in this approach. I expect my colleagues in this work to experience an increased demand also.

With so many companies struggling, why shouldn't I believe that this time offers nothing but opportunity? It's the perfect time for companies to:

The large digital wall clock in its form that we recognise today has been around since the middle of the fourteenth century. Before then, measuring the passage of time had always been a tricky affair with the movement of the sun being the only reliable method of time-telling and the only clocks being crude sundials or water clocks.

When the first mechanical clocks appeared they were driven by a spring and weight, regulated by a verge-and-foliot escapement, a type of gear system that advances the gear train at regular intervals or 'ticks'. Not only does a clock ticking come from these original devices but also the familiar clock face was developed.

The first clock to use a minute hand appeared in 1475 and innovations like the pendulum were added making mechanical clocks more and more accurate. Shapes, designs and all sorts of bells, alarms and automaton figures were added to clocks to make them more appealing, the most famous of these being the distinctive cuckoo clock which appeared at the end of the 18th century. No large digital wall clocks back in this time period.

The next big step in the development of clocks didn't arrive until the twentieth century and the development of electronics when it had been noticed that electrical charges running through crystals, such as quartz, made the crystals resonate at an accurate rate.

Computer networks use the time from atomic clocks by receiving a specialist transmission of the time through radio waves, the GPS network or over the Internet and can synchronise their networks to this UTC time by utilizing NTP (Network Time Protocol) a protocol specifically designed for synchronization.

Ethernet Clocks can be connected to computer networks that run NTP and can display the exact time as told by an atomic clock and display it on a wall or desk. Other analogue and digital wall clocks can also receive a transmission directly from an absolute time source via radio waves and display UTC time that way. Waking Up Naturally Without an Alarm Clock

Waking up naturally without the help of shrilling tones of the alarm clock is much easier than you thought. Your body slowly gets adjusted from deep sleep to a calm awakening.
First determine the exact time you need to wake up. It should be same for each day of the week. You can't say that you need to get up any time between 6 and 7 AM. It has to be exact as 6AM or 6:30 AM. Your goal is to train yourself to wake up the same time you have set. The key is to make effective use of the metal alarm clock. Envision your wake-up time. Think about the time at which you want to wake. Visualize the clock with the time you get up and also visualize you getting up. Apply the technique of auto-suggestion by telling yourself out loud "I will wake up at (your time)."

How Much Sleep You Need

Figure out how much sleep you need. This can be tricky. Do you feel drowsy the whole day? Do you yawn the whole day? These are few signs of less sleep. Go to bed at the same time every night depending upon the time you need to get up and amount of sleep you required. Initially it will be difficult to go to bed at the same time but it becomes easier over time.
Wean yourself the use of alarm clock. In few days using regular bed time and wake time you should be able to wake up without the help of an alarm clock. Note that none of these methods are 100% effective and what works for one person may or may not work for another. Try them when you don't have very important to do at a certain time or you can use alarm clock as a backup which you can set half an hour after you are planning to get up. Be careful of taking naps in between, because this will mess up the regular sleep schedule and that will make it harder to fall asleep at your planned time. If your body needs nap then make it a part of your regular schedule and take it the same time and for same length every day.

Key Features in Smartparts Digital Picture Frames to Consider

Digital picture frames are a growing category of consumer electronic devices and people choose to replace their traditional static picture frames with dynamic digital frames that show off their digital pictures in homes, offices, and public places.  Manufacturers of all types are now producing digital photo frames of all types and endless features, and one such brand that has quickly made a name in the market is Smartparts.  Smartparts digital frames come in various types and sizes, mostly in the Optipix and Syncpix product lines, each with key features to consider.
